Winter Storm Triggers Citywide Parking Ban

Salem officials declared a citywide snow emergency Friday as a winter storm moved into the area. A parking ban takes effect at 9 p.m., with additional restrictions downtown beginning at midnight. Crews began pre-treating roads earlier in the day and are expected to continue plowing through the storm.

Residents are being reminded to clear sidewalks, curb ramps, and nearby fire hydrants, and to give snowplows extra space. City garages are offering snow emergency rates starting this evening.

So Sweet Festival Kicks Off Downtown

Despite the weather, the opening night of Salem’s popular So Sweet Chocolate and Wine festival is moving forward downtown. Timed-entry ticket holders are checking in near Essex Street before heading out to enjoy illuminated ice sculptures, wine tastings, and extended shopping hours.

The kickoff event runs early this evening, with shops and restaurants offering specials and live music along the pedestrian mall. Open container laws remain in effect, and wine must be consumed inside designated locations.

Black History Month Events Shift to Sunday

Weather concerns have also led to schedule changes for the city’s Black History Month programming at Old Town Hall. Activities originally planned for Saturday have been canceled, with all events now set for Sunday afternoon.

The updated schedule includes live music, a pop-up market featuring Black-owned businesses, community discussions, and family-friendly activities. The event is free and open to the public.

Looking Ahead

Several city meetings are scheduled for early next week, including sessions of the School Committee, Licensing Board, and Tree Commission. Residents are encouraged to monitor city alerts in case the storm causes additional postponements.
