Good morning, Morgantown. A sharp blast of winter weather, a busy slate for the Mountaineers and a full community events calendar are shaping the day.

Cold, Snow Squalls and Tough Travel

Overnight snow squalls pushed through the region Friday, with brief whiteout conditions and hazardous travel stretching from northern West Virginia into southwestern Pennsylvania. Morgantown and surrounding communities were included in a late-night warning that covered portions of Interstates 68 and 79, with officials urging drivers to slow down or delay trips where possible.

Behind the squalls, forecasters expect a brutally cold day. The local forecast calls for temperatures in the single digits early this morning, with wind chills dipping well below zero and an afternoon high struggling to reach the mid-teens. Residents are being urged to limit time outdoors, dress in layers and watch out for icy spots on secondary roads and sidewalks.

WVU Sports Spotlight

It was a mixed night for WVU athletics. At Hope Coliseum, the wrestling team fell 26–13 to visiting Missouri in a Big 12 dual, despite jumping out to an early lead before the Tigers closed with wins in six of the final seven bouts. The loss moves the Mountaineers to 9–4 on the season in dual competition.

On the hardwood, WVU men’s basketball is riding momentum after a comeback road win over Cincinnati earlier this week in conference play. Attention now turns to the women’s team, which hosts Arizona in a key Big 12 matchup at 2 p.m. today in Morgantown, with both seeding and national rankings in mind.

Baseball is just around the corner as well. WVU was picked third in the Big 12 preseason coaches’ poll, the program’s highest projected finish since joining the conference. Junior right-hander Chase Meyer landed on the preseason all-conference team after a standout 2025 campaign, adding to expectations for another strong spring at Wagener Field.

What’s Happening Around Town
