South Boston Prepares for St. Patrick’s Day

South Boston is gearing up for one of the city’s biggest traditions. This year’s St. Patrick’s Day and Evacuation Day parade will kick off at 11:30 a.m. Sunday in Andrew Square, with organizers reversing the traditional route in a nod to Revolutionary War history.

City officials expect large crowds and are urging people to plan ahead. The MBTA will run additional service, including Red Line trains on a rush-hour schedule during peak parade times. Shuttle buses will connect South Station and South Boston, and several streets will be closed to traffic. Police say there are no credible threats but will maintain a strong presence throughout the day.

BU and Northeastern Advance in Hockey East

It was a strong night for Boston college hockey. Boston University defeated Vermont 4-1 at Agganis Arena in the opening round of the Hockey East Tournament. The Terriers now move forward in their bid for another conference title as postseason play continues through March 21.

Northeastern also advanced with a decisive win in its opening-round matchup, giving local fans plenty to watch as tournament play intensifies across the region.

Demolition Begins at Matthews Arena

An era is coming to a close in Boston sports history. Demolition has begun at Matthews Arena, long recognized as the world’s oldest multi-purpose indoor arena still in use. The venue has hosted generations of hockey games, including early Bruins matchups, along with college sports and concerts.

The teardown, which started in early March, marks the end of a building that has stood since 1910. For many fans, it’s the close of a chapter that shaped Boston’s deep hockey roots.
