Hazmat scare at local post office

On Friday afternoon, emergency crews converged on the South Burlington Post Office on White Street after reports of a suspicious package and a possible explosion in a postal truck. Fire, police, hazardous materials teams and the state bomb squad all responded as a precaution.

Investigators later determined that a can of dog repellent spray had burst or leaked inside the vehicle, soaking nearby packages and irritating the driver. Officials say the substance caused minor respiratory symptoms, but there were no serious injuries and the scene was cleared within a couple of hours.

The incident remains classified as accidental, and mail operations are expected to resume normally, though residents may see some delays for packages that were affected.

Councilors host listening session at Orchard School

This morning’s Conversation with a Councilor at Orchard School offered neighbors a chance to bring questions and ideas directly to city council members in an informal setting. The drop-in session is part of a continuing series aimed at making local government more accessible.
