Investigators continue work after deadly Cedarbrook Avenue fire

Authorities are still investigating a three-alarm house fire on Cedarbrook Avenue that killed one resident and left several others, including firefighters, with minor injuries earlier this week.

The blaze broke out shortly before dawn on Wednesday, sending heavy flames through a two-story home and drawing crews from across Middlesex County. Two adults were able to escape with help from first responders, including one person who jumped from a second-floor window to get away from the smoke and fire.

An adult man found on the upper floor was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials say the fire does not appear suspicious at this time, but the exact cause and the victim’s identity remain under investigation by local police, county prosecutors, and fire officials.

South Plainfield boys fall on last-second shot

On the court, South Plainfield’s boys basketball team dropped a heartbreaker on Friday. Playing on the road, the Tigers saw their opponent hit the winning basket with just two seconds remaining to seal a 59–57 loss.

South Plainfield led at points during the game and got a strong scoring night from guard Justin Vaca, who finished in double figures, but could not hold off the late rally. The close contest came as teams across the region jockey for position heading toward tournament play.

Weekend sports and community events

Despite the cold, it is a busy weekend for local families.

At South Plainfield High School today, the girls junior varsity and varsity basketball teams are scheduled to host Edison in back-to-back games late this morning. A varsity cheerleading competition involving South Plainfield, originally slated for today at David Brearley High School, has been listed as canceled on regional schedules.

On Sunday, South Plainfield wrestlers are expected to travel to Newton for a junior varsity tournament, with an early morning departure planned from the high school.

Looking ahead to next week, the South Plainfield Public Library has a full slate of programs, including Baby Time story sessions for families with infants, an ESL Conversation Group for adults on Monday morning, and a Monday evening movie program. Additional classes in crochet, book club meetings, and language prep sessions continue through Tuesday and Wednesday.

February also brings Black History Month activities in and around South Plainfield, including a mid-month program highlighting the life and legacy of entrepreneur Madam C. J. Walker, part of a broader calendar of cultural events across the region.
