South Salt Lake Daily Brief: Council Vacancies, SR-201 Shooting, Jordan River Plans
South Salt Lake, UT — February 7, 2026 — City council seats open, SR-201 shooting impacts commute, and Jordan River plans shape the city’s future.
City Council filling two open seats
South Salt Lake leaders are inviting residents to step up for public service. The City Council has vacancies in District 1 and District 5, and applications are now open to fill both seats by appointment.
Applicants must meet the usual residency and voter-registration requirements and submit paperwork in person to the City Recorder’s office at City Hall. The deadline is Wednesday, February 18, at 5 p.m. Interviews are scheduled for a public work meeting on February 25, where finalists will speak with the council before an appointment is made.
Deadly road-rage shooting shuts down SR‑201
Drivers heading between West Valley City and South Salt Lake dealt with major delays after an early-morning road-rage incident on SR‑201 ended in gunfire and one death. Eastbound lanes near Redwood Road were shut down for hours while investigators documented the scene.
Troopers say one person was taken into custody and that additional details about the victim and suspect will be released after family notifications. The closure led to long backups on nearby freeways and surface streets during the morning commute.
Jordan River renewal plan spotlights local stretch
Earlier this week, regional planners highlighted how central South Salt Lake is to the long-term cleanup and redesign of the Jordan River corridor. The Central Jordan River Reconnect plan covers seven miles of river and three key tributaries.
The South Salt Lake segment includes the Mill Creek confluence, where partners hope to restore wetlands, improve habitat, and better manage water quality downstream. The project is still in the planning stage, but city officials say it could eventually create a more connected regional park system along the river.
Today in and around the city
It should be a mild early‑February Saturday, with afternoon highs in the upper 50s and scattered clouds. Outdoor time along the river trail or at neighborhood parks should be comfortable for most of the day.
Local arts and recreation calendars list several options this morning, from youth and adult art classes to family ceramics and evening performances around the valley. City calendars also show council and community meetings coming up next week, along with a reminder that city offices will close for Presidents Day on February 16.
