Sparks Boulevard Expansion Project Underway

Sparks, NV — January 31, 2026 — Construction on the $86 million Sparks Boulevard expansion project is progressing, aiming to widen the road and improve traffic flow.

Project Details

The Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Washoe County, in partnership with the City of Sparks and the Nevada Department of Transportation, initiated the second phase of the Sparks Boulevard Project in September 2025. The project spans from the westbound Interstate 80 ramps to Baring Boulevard, with additional improvements planned from Baring to Shadow Lane. Work is expected to wrap up in mid-2027.

Improvements and Timeline

Plans include widening Sparks Boulevard to six lanes, with three in each direction, and upgrading intersections to enhance safety and traffic flow. Crews will also add sidewalks, enhance the multi-use pedestrian path, build barrier rails, install sound walls in select areas, and update drainage systems. To expedite the project, 24/7 lane closures on Sparks Boulevard began on January 26, 2026, and will remain in place through May 2026. This extension aims to reduce overall construction time by several months.

Community Impact

While the project is expected to improve traffic conditions in the long term, residents and commuters should anticipate ongoing construction-related disruptions. The RTC advises drivers to plan accordingly and stay informed about project updates.
