According to police, scammers pressure victims to pay fines immediately to avoid arrest, often directing them to wire money or purchase prepaid cards. In at least one recent case, a victim lost thousands of dollars before realizing the call was fraudulent.

Officers stress that legitimate law enforcement agencies do not demand payment over the phone and will never ask for money to clear a warrant. Anyone receiving such a call is urged to hang up and report the incident.
