Storms, Flood Warnings and Fog Top Weekend Headlines in St. Louis
St. Louis, MO – March 8, 2026 – Severe storms, rising rivers and dense fog made for a turbulent weekend as officials urge residents to stay alert.
St. Louis is waking up to calmer skies Sunday after a stretch of turbulent weather that kept emergency officials on alert across the region.
Severe Storms Sweep Through
A powerful line of thunderstorms moved across the metro area late Friday into early Saturday, prompting a Weather Impact Alert. Forecasters warned that the most dangerous conditions would arrive overnight, when many residents were asleep.
Damaging wind gusts were the primary concern, along with the potential for large hail. The storms were fueled by unseasonably warm, humid air ahead of a strong cold front. By Saturday afternoon, rain tapered off and temperatures began to fall, bringing cooler and drier air into the region.
Flood Warning Along the Meramec
Heavy rainfall has also led to rising river levels. The National Weather Service issued a Flood Warning for parts of the Meramec River, including areas near Valley Park and Eureka.
Minor flooding is forecast, with river levels expected to crest above flood stage before gradually receding early this week. Low-lying parks and recreation areas near the river could see water encroachment. Officials continue to remind drivers not to attempt crossing flooded roadways.
Dense Fog Complicates Commutes
Before the storms even arrived, dense fog blanketed much of the St. Louis area early Friday, reducing visibility during the morning commute. The fog, combined with warm and windy conditions later in the day, created a volatile setup ahead of the overnight storms.
Skies are clearing Sunday, with sunshine and milder temperatures expected to provide a brief break. Another system could bring renewed rain chances by midweek.
