Sudan ISD board to consider 2026-27 tax rate and budget hearing date
Sudan Independent School District trustees are scheduled to consider a proposed 2026 tax rate and a possible public-hearing date during a special meeting at 7 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3.
The agenda lists deliberation and possible action on adopting a proposed tax rate based on certified taxable values for Truth in Taxation publication. Trustees also may set a board meeting for 7 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17, for a public hearing on the districtโs 2026-27 budget and proposed tax rate.
What trustees will consider
The Aug. 3 agenda does not establish a final tax rate or budget. It identifies actions for the board to consider, so the proposed rate and the Aug. 17 hearing date remain subject to trustee action.
If trustees approve the proposed hearing date, Sudan residents and other property owners affected by Sudan ISD taxes would have a scheduled opportunity to review and comment on the districtโs proposed budget and tax rate. Residents should rely on the districtโs meeting record and any subsequent hearing notice for confirmation of the boardโs action.
Earlier discussion involved property values
The July 13 Sudan ISD regular-meeting agenda included a report on the Maximum Compressed Rate, or MCR, and preliminary 2026 property values. That agenda documents earlier budget-and-tax work, but it does not identify a final district tax rate.
The Texas Education Agencyโs June 18 guidance says state and local compression calculations are used to determine a districtโs maximum compressed Tier One rate. For tax year 2026, TEA listed a statewide compression rate of $0.6254 and a possible local-compression range of $0.5628 to $0.6254, but those figures are statewide context and do not establish Sudan ISDโs final rate.
TEA said it would collect local school-district property-tax data through Aug. 1, 2026, and make maximum compressed Tier One rates available in August. The agency also noted that districts must use locally certified values and complete the required property-value survey before adopting their 2026 tax rates.
What Sudan taxpayers should watch
The next scheduled decision point is the Sudan ISD special meeting at 7 a.m. Aug. 3. Residents should look for the boardโs meeting record, confirmation of any Aug. 17 hearing, the final adopted budget and the final adopted tax rate before estimating a 2026 property-tax obligation.
The available agendas do not show whether individual property taxes will rise or fall. That outcome would depend on the final district rate, certified taxable values and each propertyโs circumstances.
Sudan ISD is a separate taxing unit from the City of Sudan. The Texas Comptrollerโs Lamb County directory lists Sudan Independent School District and the City of Sudan separately, so the school boardโs proposed action concerns the districtโs tax-supported operations rather than the cityโs separate tax rate.
