Today’s big event: African American Heritage Festival

Downtown Tavares is focused on Wooton Park today as the African American Heritage Festival brings music, food and fellowship to the lakefront from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The annual gathering highlights local Black history and culture with an opening ceremony, performances by Young Blacks in Action, a mid-day awards program and a slate of musical acts, all set against the seaplane backdrop on Ruby Street. Families can expect food vendors, community information tables and a relaxed, celebratory atmosphere.

Cool, bright Saturday around Lake Dora

After a chilly week across Florida, Tavares is enjoying a cool but sunny day, with sunrise just after 7:09 a.m. and sunset around 6:12 p.m., giving festivalgoers plenty of daylight to enjoy the park. A waning gibbous moon will rise late tonight, wrapping up a crisp winter evening on the waterfront.

The cold snap earlier in the week pushed power demand to some of the highest levels Florida has seen in years, but the grid held up and residents here are mainly contending with frosty mornings rather than major outages. Layers and jackets are still wise for anyone staying out on the lakefront into the evening.

On the horizon: Seaplane shows and pavilion events

Today’s heritage celebration is one of several lakefront events lining up for late winter. In early March, Wooton Park will host the Planes, Tunes & BBQ weekend featuring Seaplane-A-Palooza, a free two-day festival with seaplane contests, live music, a barbecue competition, an air show and a nighttime drone show.

The nearby Tavares Pavilion on the Lake remains busy as a wedding and event venue, supported by expanded parking options that include on-site lots, spaces in Wooton Park and access to the large Lake County parking garage just up the street.
