Topsfield building department hours change: new Mon–Wed and Thurs window

Topsfield has updated the weekday hours for in-person help at Town Hall’s Building Department / Inspectional Services office. The change matters if you’re a homeowner, contractor, or resident planning a project that depends on timely permitting questions and on-site inspections.
According to a Town News Flash posted July 17, 2026, the office will be open Mon–Wed, 7:00am–12:00pm; Thursday, 7:00am–11:00am; and Friday is closed.

For in-person permitting and inspection support, Topsfield Inspectional Services can be found on the ground floor when you enter Town Hall through the rear entrance.

The Inspectional Services page lists inspection hours as Mon–Thurs, 10:00am–2:00pm.
That means the office hours and the inspection window don’t fully overlap—especially on Thursdays, when the office closes at 11:00am but inspections continue until 2:00pm. Contractors and residents coordinating inspection dates should plan around that difference.
How permitting works (including online submissions)
Topsfield says that for residential building permits, electrical permits, plumbing and gas permits, and sheet metal permits, applications can be submitted online using PermitLink. The town also notes that uploaded documents must be in PDF form.
Important payment guidance is also posted: you must wait for confirmation of the permit fee amount before paying online.
Topsfield also emphasizes that all permits must be finalized and that the project isn’t complete unless all required inspections have been performed and approved by the applicable inspector.
