New southside fire station opens, replacing a decades-old facility
Tucson Fire Station 14 opened Feb. 23 on South Nogales Highway, replacing a station firefighters had used since 1968. City officials said the new build was designed around firefighter safety and recovery, with features like a decontamination area to keep harmful residue from gear out of living spaces and alarms that can be targeted to the crew assigned to a call.
The station is also positioned for faster access to major routes on the south side, where growth and traffic have put more demand on emergency response.
Homelessness services data: more people helped, but more people returning
At a recent council discussion of 2025 homelessness data, the city heard that 5,974 people were served last year, about 9% more than the year before. Staff described a ‘balanced approach’ that blends outreach and service connections with enforcement when needed.
Officials also flagged an increase in people returning to homelessness after receiving help, a sign that preventing repeat episodes and expanding stable housing options remain urgent work.

City staff have launched a four-meeting series to gather feedback on draft rules for large-scale data centers. The proposal would create a clear definition for the land use and spell out where facilities could be allowed and under what standards, after community debate over how data centers could affect neighborhoods and local resources.
Diocese installs and ordains a new bishop in Tucson
Thousands filled St. Augustine Cathedral on Feb. 20 for the ordination and installation of Bishop James Misko. Church leaders described the moment as a rare local milestone, with Tucson hosting the ordination of its new bishop as he begins ministry in Southern Arizona.
