Victoria Planning Commission openings put development decisions in focus

Victoria is accepting applications for three seats on the city’s Planning Commission, creating an opportunity for residents to take part in reviews that shape how land is developed and how city codes are applied.

The City of Victoria posted the application notice on July 21, 2026. The three appointments will carry three-year terms ending in August 2029. Applications are due August 17, 2026.

What the commission handles

The city says the Planning Commission reviews and approves new residential and commercial developments to ensure that city codes involving platting and site use are properly applied. It also makes recommendations to the City Council on variance requests for projects that conflict with city code.

Commission business can involve subdivision design, proposed land uses, site plans, street and access standards, infrastructure questions and other development-related matters. A June 18 Planning Commission agenda, for example, included variance requests, a proposed final plat and amendments to the city’s Unified Development Ordinance.

The openings do not give commissioners independent authority over every project or land-use decision. The commission operates within the city’s development-review process, and the City Council remains responsible for appointing the members and considering variance recommendations.

How appointments will work

Residents must submit an application through the city’s boards and commissions process by the August 17 deadline. The city notice says applications may be submitted through the online application, delivered to the City Secretary’s Office at City Hall, mailed to P.O. Box 1758, Victoria, Texas 77901, faxed to 361-485-3045 or emailed to the address listed in the notice.

The City Council will review the applications and appoint the new commissioners during an upcoming council meeting. The city has not specified the appointment date in the notice.

The current commission roster lists three members whose terms expire in August 2026. Those expiring terms correspond to the three openings, but the city has not announced completed appointments for the new terms.

Meeting schedule and location

The Planning Commission page lists meetings at 5:15 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month in the City Council Chambers at 107 W. Juan Linn Street. The June 18 agenda also identifies the Council Chambers at 107 W. Juan Linn in Victoria.

The application notice and the city’s general contact information identify City Hall and the City Secretary’s Office at 105 W. Juan Linn Street. Residents applying for a seat should follow the application instructions in the city notice rather than assuming the meeting and application addresses are the same.

Victoria residents interested in land use, subdivision review or neighborhood development have until August 17 to apply. The city also provides access to Planning Commission agendas and previous meeting materials for residents who want to review the panel’s work before applying.
