Ville Platte motorists face LA 29 closure as $9.1M project begins
Ville Platte-area motorists should use a signed detour around a temporary LA 29 closure near LA 758 while a $9.1 million project continues through May 2027.
Ville Platte-area motorists are facing a temporary closure on LA 29 near LA 758 as the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development begins a $9.1 million highway improvement project spanning Evangeline and St. Landry parishes.
DOTD announced the project July 17, 2026. Through traffic is scheduled to remain closed through August 28, 2026, while crews replace a cross drain near LA 758.
What drivers should know
A signed detour directs motorists to use US 190, LA 13 and LA 758. Drivers who regularly use the LA 29 corridor should follow posted signs, allow additional routing time and check 511 Louisiana before traveling because closure and route conditions can change.
The temporary closure is tied to the cross-drain work. After that phase, motorists should still expect construction activity, lane restrictions and temporary delays as the larger project continues.
Project covers 5.6 miles
The broader project covers 5.6 miles of LA 29 between LA 13 and LA 758. Planned work includes pavement rehabilitation, resurfacing, roadway realignment, drainage improvements, rumble strips and new pavement markings.
The work affects a corridor used by residents, commercial traffic, commuters, school-related vehicles and service providers traveling through the two-parish area. The current detour applies to through traffic near LA 758; motorists should use the signed route rather than assume local access conditions will remain unchanged.
Emergency routes may change
Emergency vehicles will retain access through the area, but DOTD warns that responders will use alternate routes during the full closure and may experience delays. Residents should not interpret emergency access as delay-free, particularly while crews are working around the closed section.
Ville Platte is a city and the parish seat of Evangeline Parish, according to the City of Ville Platte. DOTD describes the highway work as a parish-level project rather than a project within Ville Platte city limits, but the affected corridor is relevant to Ville Platte-area travel and connections to regional roads.
Work expected through May 2027
The immediate cross-drain closure is scheduled through August 28, 2026, while the larger project is expected to continue through May 2027. Even after the current full closure ends, motorists should be prepared for additional construction activity and possible delays as roadway, drainage and safety improvements proceed.
