Wastewater expansion tied to Angier advances as Harnett County works to increase regional capacity

Angier is one of three municipalities included in Harnett County agreements to expand regional wastewater-treatment capacity as construction continues on the Terrible Creek wastewater project and the North Harnett Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The Town of Fuquay-Varina posted construction updates July 14, 2026. The update identifies agreements among Harnett County, Angier, Fuquay-Varina and Lillington, making Angier a direct participant in the regional capacity effort rather than simply a community near the projects.

What the projects include

Fuquay-Varina’s treatment capacity is described as increasing from 2.6 million gallons per day to 6.0 million gallons per day. That figure describes the planned increase in Fuquay-Varina’s treatment capacity; it is not an allocation assigned entirely to Angier.

The construction effort includes the Terrible Creek project and the North Harnett Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant. The agreements are intended to expand regional capacity as the participating governments implement their arrangements and work continues on the facilities.

For Angier, additional regional wastewater capacity could affect the community’s ability to accommodate housing and commercial development. Wastewater treatment is also connected to public-health protection, making the infrastructure relevant beyond the construction sites themselves.

Water alert is a separate development

Harnett Regional Water implemented a voluntary Stage 1 water-shortage alert effective July 2, 2026. Harnett County attributed the conservation status to reduced discharges from Jordan Lake.

The alert concerns current water-use conservation, while the July 14 construction update concerns longer-term wastewater treatment capacity. The two developments are separate, and the water-shortage alert was not identified as a result of the wastewater projects.

What residents can expect next

Construction remains underway on the Terrible Creek and North Harnett Regional projects. The agreements establish Angier as a participating municipality, but they do not identify Angier’s precise future treatment allocation.

The public updates also do not provide a final completion date for every project component, a total project cost or an immediate rate impact for Angier residents. Those details will matter as the regional arrangements move from construction toward operation.

For now, the significant development is the continued regional wastewater expansion involving Angier, Harnett County, Fuquay-Varina and Lillington, alongside a separate voluntary water-conservation alert affecting Harnett Regional Water customers.
