West New York’s New Middle School Is Now in Foundation Construction
West New York’s planned new middle school has moved into foundation construction, with footings and foundation work reported underway as of July 1, 2026, by the New Jersey Schools Development Authority.
The update places the project at 6400 Broadway, between 64th and 65th streets, after a June 18 groundbreaking. Because July 1 is the latest official construction-status date identified for the project, it should be read as the most recent documented milestone rather than as an August 4, 2026, same-day update.
What changed at the site
The SDA’s project record says construction is active and that footings and foundation work were ongoing July 1. The authority’s July board materials also said site work had commenced, permits were being submitted for approval for the first design package and the second package was under review.
That means the project has advanced beyond early site preparation and the ceremonial groundbreaking into physical work on the building’s foundation. It does not mean the school is complete, occupied or ready to serve students.
School size, grades and capacity
The planned facility is approximately 162,000 square feet and is designed for a maximum of 876 students in grades 6 through 8.
The SDA’s June 18 announcement listed 30 general classrooms, six science labs, three art class or project rooms, a kiln, a STEAM lab, a dance and aerobics studio, vocal and instrumental music rooms, an auditorium, a gymnasium, a media center and a cafeteria.
The project also has a stated goal of achieving LEED Silver certification. That is a design and construction goal, not evidence that certification has been completed.
Estimated cost and anticipated opening
The SDA lists the total estimated project cost at $121.8 million. The figure is an estimate, not a final audited expenditure.
The anticipated school opening is September 2028. The authority cautions that milestone dates depend on several factors and may change as design, permitting and construction continue.
Who is building and managing it
Terminal Construction Corporation is the design-build contractor, working with DMR Architects as the design-build architect. EPIC Management is the construction manager; the SDA’s procurement record shows that contract was awarded April 6, 2026. APS Contracting handled early site preparation.
The SDA is managing and funding the project through New Jersey’s school-construction program.
