Westbound Sunrise Highway Closures in Islip Could Affect Bohemia Travel
Weeknight westbound Sunrise Highway closures at Islip’s Exit 43 began July 27 for bridge maintenance and are expected to continue for about two months.
Weeknight closures on westbound Sunrise Highway began Monday, July 27, at Exit 43 in the Town of Islip, creating a recurring overnight travel restriction for people driving through the area from Bohemia and nearby communities.
The New York State Department of Transportation said the closure affects westbound State Route 27 at Fifth Avenue, also identified as County Route 13, in Suffolk County. The restriction is scheduled for weeknights from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. and is expected to continue for approximately two months.
What is closed
The work zone is at Exit 43 in Islip, not in Bohemia itself. NYSDOT said crews are carrying out maintenance on the Fifth Avenue bridge over Sunrise Highway. Construction activity is weather-dependent, so the schedule may change based on conditions.
For westbound drivers, the closure applies during the overnight work period. The advisory does not provide a specific estimate for traffic delays or additional travel time, so drivers should plan for the possibility of changing routes when traveling west after 10 p.m.
How the official detour works
NYSDOT said motorists will be briefly detoured onto the North Service Road before reentering Sunrise Highway. Drivers should follow posted signs and use caution near workers and equipment.
The state recommends checking 511NY or the 511NY mobile app before leaving for updated travel information. That is especially important for late-night commuters, local business employees, delivery drivers and anyone making a westbound trip during the construction window.
Why Bohemia residents are included in the alert
The closure is located elsewhere in the Town of Islip, but the Town of Islip identifies Bohemia as part of the town’s Council District 2. That makes the project relevant to Bohemia residents who use the Sunrise Highway corridor for work, errands, appointments or connections to other Long Island routes.
The impact will depend on a driver’s route and travel time. The advisory does not establish that Sunrise Highway is closed in Bohemia, nor does it confirm widespread congestion. The practical takeaway is narrower: westbound travelers passing through the Islip work zone should expect an overnight restriction on weeknights and follow the North Service Road detour.
A separate Veterans Memorial Highway project
Drivers should not confuse the Sunrise Highway bridge maintenance with a separate NYSDOT project on Veterans Memorial Highway, or State Route 454. That work affects both directions between Wheeler Road and the Long Island Expressway North Service Road, runs weeknights from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and is expected to last approximately five weeks.
The two projects have different locations, hours and detours. Checking 511NY before traveling can help drivers determine which overnight restrictions are active and whether weather or construction conditions have changed the schedule.
