Westminster, MD Daily Brief for February 7, 2026
Westminster, MD — February 7, 2026 — Bitter cold, high winds and county warming centers top today’s local updates, plus a look at community events.
Warming centers open through Monday
With dangerous cold settling in this weekend, county officials are opening warming centers across Carroll County, including locations in Westminster, through Monday, February 9.
Branches of the public library system are available during regular hours for anyone who needs a safe, heated place to spend part of the day, including the Westminster branch on East Main Street. Senior and community centers in Westminster and nearby towns will also serve as daytime warming sites on Monday, along with an overnight adult shelter on Stoner Avenue for people without housing.
Residents are encouraged to call ahead to confirm hours, arrange transportation if needed, and check on neighbors who may be at higher risk from the cold.
High wind warning and bitter wind chills
The National Weather Service has a high wind warning and cold weather advisory in effect today, with northwest winds expected to gust up to about 60 miles per hour and wind chills dropping well below zero at times.
Forecasters say temperatures will struggle to reach the low 30s, falling into the teens tonight, while strong winds may bring scattered power outages and downed tree limbs around Westminster.
Officials urge people to limit time outdoors, dress in layers with hats and gloves, bring pets inside, and make sure outdoor animals have dry shelter, food, and unfrozen water.
Faith gathering and local history events
Last night, parishioners gathered at St. John Roman Catholic Church in Westminster for the monthly First Friday Eucharistic Holy Hour, an evening service with exposition, adoration, and confession. The series continues on first Fridays throughout the year, offering a quiet hour of prayer for anyone who wishes to attend.
Looking ahead, the Historical Society of Carroll County is preparing a full slate of Carroll 250 programs this month, including a rescheduled talk on Revolutionary War patriots buried in county cemeteries and several discussions on preservation, genealogy, and local history at venues in Westminster and nearby communities.
These cultural events provide a welcome break from the winter weather and a chance to connect with neighbors while learning more about the county’s past.
