Westwood seeks development partner for former Westwood View school site
WESTWOOD, Kan. โ The City of Westwood has begun accepting proposals from potential development partners for the former Westwood View Elementary School site at 2511 W. 50th Street, opening a formal process for determining what could come next for the prominent redevelopment area.
The city issued its request for proposals on June 11, 2026. The proposal-review period is scheduled to end July 9, 2026. The process does not identify a selected developer, and the available city materials do not establish a final project design, project size, financing plan, zoning approvals or construction schedule.
A new search after an earlier agreement ended
Westwoodโs materials connect the school-site search to a broader redevelopment effort at 50th and Rainbow. The former school property is also part of an earlier city plan involving Joe Dennis Park.
According to city materials, an April 1, 2025, election concerned selling Joe Dennis Park to enable redevelopment and replacing the park on the former school site. The city also says Karbank, the prior development partner, terminated its purchase agreement after the election.
The current RFP therefore represents a new effort to identify a private partner for the former school property. It begins a formal selection process, rather than announcing that redevelopment has been approved or that construction is ready to begin.
What the process means locally
The siteโs future is relevant to Westwood residents, nearby homeowners, park users and taxpayers because the proposal process concerns public land, park planning and future land use in a prominent part of the city. The outcome could also affect how the 50th-and-Rainbow area develops, although the city has not yet disclosed which proposal, if any, will advance.
For now, the known next step is the cityโs review of proposals through July 9. The available records do not identify the proposals received or a future development partner. They also do not confirm that Joe Dennis Park will ultimately be sold, since any such action and the broader redevelopment plan remain subject to subsequent decisions and approvals.
