Street Improvements Underway in Whittier

The City of Whittier has initiated Phase 1 of the Slurry Seal Program, focusing on crack sealing, slurry sealing, and striping on various city streets. Work commenced on November 3, 2025, with slurry seal application starting November 12. Residents are advised of potential temporary and full street closures during construction. The project aims to enhance road durability and safety for all commuters.

New Dual-Enrollment Program Launched

In collaboration with the Whittier Union High School District, Rio Hondo College has introduced a free dual-enrollment program. This initiative allows students from all seven Whittier Union high schools to earn UC- and CSU-transferable credits while completing their regular coursework. Beginning in 9th grade, students can take one college course each semester, enabling them to earn up to 30 college credits before graduation. The program is funded by nearly $1 million in California Department of Education grants and is taught entirely by Rio Hondo College professors, with waived tuition and free textbooks.

Attempted Kidnapping Reported in Whittier

Authorities are searching for a suspect involved in an attempted kidnapping that occurred on Sunday afternoon in the 10500 block of 1st Avenue. A 35-year-old woman reported that a white van pulled up beside her, and a man attempted to grab her and pull her inside. The woman managed to break free and seek help at a nearby shopping center.
