Wind, Fire Risk and Early Voting Shape Wednesday in Lubbock
Lubbock, TX – February 18, 2026 – Lubbock faces high winds, critical fire danger and active early voting today, as officials urge caution and civic turnout.
Windy stretch keeps Lubbock on fire watch
Lubbock is in the middle of several windy days that are pushing fire danger into the critical range across the South Plains.
Forecasters say gusts that topped 70 mph in parts of the area on Tuesday will ease slightly but remain strong today and through late week, keeping blowing dust and elevated fire risk in the forecast.
A fire weather warning covers much of the region today, with low humidity, above-normal temperatures and strong southwest winds combining to make any spark dangerous. Residents are being urged to avoid outdoor burning and to secure loose items that could blow into power lines or dry fields.
Weather offices expect winds to stay in the 20–35 mph range this afternoon, with higher gusts possible. Conditions should cool and gradually calm heading into the weekend, but fire danger is expected to stay elevated for several days.
Lubbock Fire Rescue shifts into high-alert mode
Lubbock Fire Rescue says it has stepped up staffing and preparedness to handle potential grass and field fires during this active wind pattern.
Officials note that recent incidents around the county show how quickly small grass fires can flare up and spread when power lines are downed or sparks land in dry vegetation. So far, recent fires have been kept relatively small and contained, with no serious injuries reported.
Crews are asking residents to report smoke or fire immediately, avoid parking on tall grass, and delay welding or any outdoor work that could throw off sparks until winds ease.
Early voting underway for March 3 primary
While the weather dominates safety concerns, local elections are also underway. Early voting has opened for the March 3 party primaries, giving Lubbock County voters a 10-day window to cast ballots before Election Day.
Registered voters can choose from multiple early voting locations across the county, including the main elections office downtown and several supermarket-based sites. Most locations are open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., with shorter hours on Sunday.
Local races on the ballot include county-level offices such as county judge and clerk, along with state and federal contests. Election officials encourage voters to check sample ballots and locations in advance, and to plan around today’s high winds and blowing dust if they are headed out to vote.
Housing and rent remain relatively stable
Amid the busy news cycle, recent data show Lubbock’s housing and rental markets holding steady. Average apartment rents are only slightly higher than a year ago and remain well below the national average, keeping the city comparatively affordable.
Local real estate leaders say the market has been marked by modest growth in prices without major swings, offering some predictability for both renters and buyers.
