WJCC redistricting remains a draft process, with final recommendation expected in October

Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools presented revised attendance-zone maps to the School Board on Aug. 4, but the proposals are not a final plan. The division expects to bring a final redistricting recommendation to the board in October 2026, with new attendance zones planned to take effect in August 2027.

The changes are being developed as WJCC prepares to move its Bright Beginnings pre-K program into two dedicated centers at the Norge and Clara Byrd Baker elementary-school sites in fall 2027. The school division says the redistricting effort is intended to address uneven classroom utilization after those pre-K classrooms leave elementary-school buildings.

What has changed so far

The revised maps followed community feedback gathered during the ongoing redistricting process. WJCC is working with MGT Impact Solutions on the development of new attendance zones, and additional community engagement is listed for early fall 2026 on the division’s timeline.

Bright Beginnings currently occupies space in five of WJCC’s nine elementary schools. Moving the program to two dedicated centers would change how classroom space is used across the division and is the central planning reason cited for the attendance-zone review.

WHRO reported that the revised proposal could require roughly 16% of students to change schools if the plan is approved. That figure is a proposal estimate, not a final count. The final list of affected schools, neighborhoods and students depends on the map ultimately considered and adopted by the School Board.

What families should expect next

No final attendance-zone map has been adopted, and the School Board has not voted on a final plan. Families in Williamsburg and James City County therefore do not yet have definitive new elementary-school assignments based on this redistricting process.

Under WJCC’s current timeline, the next major decision point is a final recommendation to the School Board in October 2026. If a plan is adopted, the new attendance zones are scheduled to begin in August 2027, covering the 2027-28 school year and subsequent years.

The timing connects two changes for the division: the opening of dedicated Bright Beginnings centers and a possible redistribution of elementary-school attendance zones. Until the board considers a final recommendation, the revised maps remain proposals rather than an adopted assignment plan.
