2026–27 Post-9/11 GI Bill rates set for veterans and eligible dependents

The Department of Veterans Affairs has published the Post-9/11 GI Bill benefit rates that will apply from Aug. 1, 2026, through July 31, 2027, giving veterans, service members and eligible dependents a new schedule for estimating education and training assistance.

The rates apply nationally to eligible recipients using Chapter 33 benefits. The schedule covers several major parts of the benefit: tuition and training support, monthly housing allowances, books and supplies, and payments for licensing or certification tests.

Eligibility can range from 50% to 100%

The VA lists six benefit eligibility tiers: 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90% and 100%. The applicable percentage is based on qualifying service time and circumstances. A recipient’s tier affects the amount of benefits available, so the published maximums do not represent a uniform payment for every person using the GI Bill.

Books, testing and housing benefits

The books-and-supplies benefit can reach $1,000 per academic year. The amount available to an individual recipient depends on the applicable eligibility and enrollment details rather than automatically reaching the maximum.

The schedule also allows payments of up to $2,000 for licensing and certification tests. That limit applies to the licensing and certification test benefit described in the rate schedule. The VA describes national test-fee reimbursement separately; its page does not state a single dollar cap for that benefit, while entitlement is charged according to the published rate.

Monthly housing allowances use 2026 Department of Defense Basic Allowance for Housing rates for an E-5 with dependents. The VA does not provide one nationwide housing amount because the payment varies by location. A recipient’s school ZIP code, training type and enrollment or work hours can affect the amount.

What recipients should check

Veterans, service members and eligible dependents beginning or continuing school, job training or covered testing can use the 2026–27 period to estimate their potential assistance. The practical calculation requires more than identifying the new benefit year: recipients must determine their eligibility percentage and match their program and location to the applicable payment rules.

Housing estimates should be based on the location tied to the approved education or training program, while books, supplies and testing benefits should be reviewed against the specific type of enrollment or examination. The VA’s benefit statement can help recipients track how much entitlement they have already used and what remains.
