AmeriCorps Opens Grant Competition for Senior Volunteer Projects
AmeriCorps has opened its FY 2027 funding competition for organizations that recruit adults age 55 and older for AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP community-service projects.
The agency announced the opportunity on August 20, 2026. Applications are due by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.
The competition is intended in part to create projects in geographic areas that do not currently have an AmeriCorps-funded RSVP program. It also supports successful projects seeking to continue their work or expand the number of older adult volunteers they engage. The opportunity is an open funding competition, not an announcement that grants have already been awarded.
The grant is for eligible organizations seeking project funding—not for individuals applying to become volunteers.
What the RSVP program does
AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP connects adults age 55 and older with community organizations that need volunteers. Participants can choose how, where and how often they serve, with commitments ranging from a few hours to a maximum of 40 hours per week.
RSVP volunteers may tutor children, help prepare simple taxes, assist people affected by natural disasters, provide nutrition or food support, facilitate opioid and substance-use education, and address other locally identified needs.
RSVP volunteers generally serve without compensation. Some individual programs may offer limited benefits or reimbursements, but those details vary by project and are separate from the grant competition.
Who can apply
Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations, tribal communities or organizations, faith-based organizations, institutions of higher education, and state or local governments.
Applicants may propose projects addressing one or more of AmeriCorps’ listed priorities, or they may present another documented community need. Choosing a priority area does not guarantee funding.
Six priority areas
For the FY 2027 competition, AmeriCorps is prioritizing projects involving:
- Supporting older adults and caregivers
- Helping older adults re-enter the workforce
- Building strong families
- Preventing and mitigating fraud and scams affecting older adults
- Reducing the number of people who are homeless
- Supporting behavioral health initiatives
The priorities cover services such as respite and caregiver support, job-readiness assistance, family mentoring, scam prevention, affordable-housing and homelessness services, mental-health support, isolation reduction, harm-reduction tools and recovery services.

Organizations considering an application should use the official FY 2027 AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP funding page and the agency’s partner resources for the notice of funding opportunity, application instructions, technical assistance and submission guidance.
The deadline is 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on October 20, 2026. Applicants should allow time to complete required materials and submit through the agency’s designated application system. The official notice should control if any application detail differs from a summary of the opportunity.
How individuals can find volunteer work
Adults age 55 and older do not apply directly for this grant. People interested in volunteering can use the AmeriCorps Seniors Pathfinder tool to look for existing opportunities, whether or not a new FY 2027 project is ultimately funded in their area.
