U.S. wholesale sales fell 3.0% in June while inventories edged up
Sales by U.S. merchant wholesalers fell 3.0% in June 2026 to a seasonally adjusted $794.1 billion, the Census Bureau reported Aug. 6. Despite the monthly decline, sales were 14.1% higher than in June 2025.
The May monthly sales increase was revised from 3.4% to 3.5%. The figures exclude manufacturers’ sales branches and offices and are not adjusted for price changes.
Inventories reached $944.7 billion
Wholesale inventories increased 0.2% in June to $944.7 billion and were 4.2% higher than a year earlier. The monthly change was not statistically distinguishable from zero at the Census Bureau’s stated confidence level.
The inventory-to-sales ratio was 1.19, compared with 1.30 in June 2025. The lower year-over-year ratio indicates wholesalers held less inventory relative to monthly sales than they did a year earlier.
July report is scheduled for Sept. 10
