FAA Certifies Boeing 737 MAX 7 After Decade-Long Review
The Federal Aviation Administration certified Boeing’s 737 MAX 7 on August 3, 2026, after almost a decade of review, testing, design changes and additional safety analysis.
The decision is a major regulatory milestone for Boeing and could eventually affect airline fleet planning and short- and medium-haul travel. But it is not the same as immediate passenger service. Individual airplanes still must be produced, receive airworthiness certification, be delivered to airlines and complete normal operational preparations before commercial flights begin.
What the FAA approved
The FAA issued an amended type certificate for the 737 MAX 7 and updated its Production Limitation Record. The amended type certificate confirms that the aircraft’s approved design complies with applicable design and safety requirements. The Production Limitation Record identifies the aircraft authorized for production under the approved type design.
In practical terms, the action allows Boeing to begin producing the MAX 7 under the approved design. It does not mean that every MAX 7 has been built, individually certified or placed into passenger service.
Safety changes required for the MAX 7
The FAA said the approval required improvements involving flight controls, flightcrew alerting and engine protection.
The changes include updates to flight-control software and improvements to the flightcrew alerting system. The agency said those changes are intended to give pilots clearer information and warnings during flight.
The aircraft also includes a redesigned engine anti-ice system. The redesign is intended to prevent engine-inlet overheating that could weaken the surrounding structure.
The FAA said its work included review of flight controls, system safety assessments, human factors, flightcrew alerting and other novel, complex or safety-critical areas. The agency required additional testing, design changes and analysis before granting approval.
Why the review took years
The MAX 7 certification followed heightened scrutiny of Boeing’s 737 MAX program after Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, two 737 MAX 8 crashes in 2018 and 2019 that killed 346 people.
The FAA said the required improvements addressed provisions of the Aircraft Certification, Safety, and Accountability Act and recommendations from the National Transportation Safety Board. The agency described the certification process as sustained work to resolve technical issues and examine the aircraft’s supporting safety analyses.

What it means for Boeing and airlines
For Boeing, the updated production authorization removes a major regulatory barrier to manufacturing the MAX 7. The aircraft is expected to serve primarily short- and medium-haul routes. Several airlines, including Southwest Airlines, have outstanding orders, according to The Associated Press.
For airlines, the next milestones include production, individual airworthiness certification, delivery planning and operational preparation. The FAA’s approval does not establish a delivery date or a first commercial route.
Why FAA oversight continues
The FAA said safety inspectors will remain at Boeing production facilities across the country. Their work will include monitoring manufacturing and observing and assessing Boeing’s Safety Management System and safety culture.
The continuing oversight is significant because certification ends one stage of the MAX 7 review, not the FAA’s supervision of how Boeing builds and certifies aircraft. In a July 20, 2026 decision, the FAA said Boeing could resume issuing airworthiness certificates for all 737 MAX and 787 airplanes after a months-long review, while the agency continued inspections, audits and monitoring of production quality and compliance with approved designs.
An airworthiness certificate is issued for an individual aircraft at the end of the production process. That separate step is one reason the MAX 7 certification should not be described as an immediate start of passenger service.
What passengers should watch next
The practical milestones are production progress, individual airworthiness certificates, airline deliveries, operational approvals and the aircraft’s eventual entry into commercial service.
Passengers may eventually see the MAX 7 added to short- and medium-haul schedules, but the timing will depend on Boeing’s production, airline decisions and completion of the remaining regulatory and operational steps. The certification confirms the approved design; it does not guarantee that every future production unit will be free of safety problems or end federal scrutiny.
