FTC Seeks Public Comment on Policy Addressing AI Accuracy and Consumer Harm

The Federal Trade Commission has opened a public-comment process on a proposed policy statement addressing concerns about how artificial-intelligence systems behave and how companies describe their accuracy to consumers.

The FTC’s artificial-intelligence policy page lists the initiative on July 1, 2026. A separate FTC announcement listed in the agency’s 2026 press-release index is dated June 22 and identifies the public-comment effort on AI accuracy.

The proposed statement addresses concerns that AI companies could manipulate the behavior of their systems in ways that conflict with users’ reasonable expectations. It also focuses on inaccurate claims about AI accuracy, an issue with potential consequences for people and businesses using consumer-facing technology.

That distinction is important as federal agencies respond to a rapidly expanding AI market. The FTC initiative signals that accuracy claims, system behavior and consumer-facing AI products are being considered within a federal consumer-protection framework.
