Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool closure extended through Aug. 10

The National Park Service is keeping the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and specified surrounding parkland closed to visitors through Monday, Aug. 10, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. local time.

The continuation record, signed July 11 and last updated July 14, says the temporary restriction remains necessary while work continues at the pool. The agency cites security, resource-protection and public-safety concerns.

Aug. 10 is the current outside deadline in the NPS record, not a guaranteed reopening date. The agency says the closure will be lifted as soon as it is no longer necessary, and some areas may reopen sooner after equipment is removed.

What is closed

The restriction covers the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and the walkways immediately adjacent to it.

It also includes the grass median on the north side of the pool, including the exterior walkways between the pool and North Elm Walk, and the grass median on the south side between the pool-side walkways and South Elm Walk.

The NPS describes the restriction as temporary and partial. It does not mean the entire National Mall or every part of the Lincoln Memorial grounds is closed.

What may remain accessible

The agency says it will maintain access to nearby memorials and restrooms wherever possible. Routes may change, however, depending on fencing, equipment and onsite safety controls.

The current closure footprint is smaller than the broader area covered by the June 25, 2026, determination. The NPS says the footprint may shrink again as equipment is removed.

Separate road closures

Visitors should also account for a separate road restriction on Madison Drive NW and Jefferson Drive SW between 3rd and 7th streets. The NPS says those roads are closed to the public from 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, through 11:59 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, 2026.

That transportation restriction is separate from the Reflecting Pool closure and does not mean the entire National Mall is closed.

What to check before visiting

Check the National Mall and Memorial Parks alerts and conditions page immediately before arriving. The accessible area may change before Aug. 10 as work equipment is removed.

Follow onsite fencing, barriers and posted signs even if an earlier map or trip plan shows a route that was previously open. The NPS says public access will be restored as soon as practicable once the restriction is no longer necessary.
