Nearly 40% of Team USA’s 2026 Olympic athletes competed in college, USOPC says
Nearly 40% of the U.S. athletes who competed at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics had competed collegiately, according to a national accounting by the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee.
The USOPC said 88 of Team USA’s 232 Olympic athletes competed in college. Those athletes represented 54 different schools, documenting the reach of collegiate sports across the U.S. winter Olympic team.
The accounting covers NCAA Divisions I, II and III as well as collegiate club programs. That makes the total broader than a count limited to the NCAA’s highest-profile Division I programs and offers a national view of the different college routes represented at the Games.
Five teams had at least 75% collegiate participation
College participation was especially common on five U.S. teams: bobsled, cross-country skiing, men’s ice hockey, women’s ice hockey and skeleton. The USOPC said each had collegiate participation of at least 75%.
The team-level figure describes the share of athletes with collegiate backgrounds. It does not establish that college competition caused any athlete’s Olympic selection, but it shows how frequently college experience appeared among several U.S. teams at Milano Cortina.
The five-team list also spans different types of winter competition. Ice hockey is a major organized college sport, while bobsled, cross-country skiing and skeleton represent sports with different competitive structures. The USOPC’s accounting places those teams in the same national measure without suggesting that their college pathways were identical.
A 54-school network behind the team
The 88 athletes came from 54 schools rather than one campus or a small group of dominant programs. The figure therefore describes a distributed college presence across the U.S. Olympic roster.
The USOPC published a raw-data athlete database and a U.S. school leaderboard alongside its summary. Those tools identify the athletes and schools included in the count and allow the broader total to be examined at the individual level.
The visible summary gives the number of participating schools but does not present a school-by-school count in its overview. The database and leaderboard provide the underlying detail for readers examining how the 88 athletes were distributed.
For colleges, the numbers quantify a connection between campus athletics and elite winter competition. They also show that an athlete appearing on a U.S. Olympic team may have a background in any of the three NCAA divisions or in a collegiate club program. The accounting is a snapshot of the 2026 team, not a forecast of future Olympic rosters.
NCAA rules address Olympic-linked competition
The NCAA’s 2026-27 legislative relief page lists competition and recruiting waivers affecting Olympic-linked and amateur sports. Among the measures listed is a waiver allowing a 13-week Division I triathlon season beginning Aug. 28, 2026.
The NCAA page also describes recruiting relief connected to Olympic, world-championship and national-team competitions. Those provisions recognize that athletes competing for national teams can have schedules and recruiting circumstances that extend beyond a standard college sports calendar.
The waiver information is separate from the USOPC’s count and does not change the number of athletes or schools in the Milano Cortina accounting. It provides policy context for the broader relationship between college athletics and athletes competing in Olympic-linked sports.
Taken together, the figures put that relationship in measurable terms: 88 of 232 U.S. Olympic athletes, nearly 40% of the team, had competed collegiately. They represented 54 schools, with participation covering all three NCAA divisions and collegiate club programs. Five U.S. teams reached at least 75% collegiate participation.
