USOPC says nearly 40% of 2026 U.S. Olympic team competed in college sports
Nearly 40% of the United States athletes who competed at the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics had competed in college sports, according to an updated national database published July 24 by the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee.
The USOPC reported that 88 of the 232 U.S. Olympic athletes had collegiate experience. Those athletes represented 54 different schools, providing a national snapshot of the connection between college sports and the U.S. Olympic team.
A broad college connection
The USOPC’s figures include athletes who attended or competed for schools across NCAA Divisions I, II and III, as well as collegiate club programs. The numbers therefore cover more than a single level of college competition.
The description of the athletes as having competed collegiately does not establish that every athlete was an NCAA varsity athlete. It also does not identify college sports as the only pathway through which any of the Olympians developed.
The five teams with at least 75% collegiate participation were bobsled, cross-country skiing, men’s ice hockey, women’s ice hockey and skeleton, according to the USOPC summary.
Those figures measure collegiate participation and school representation. They are not a medal count, a competition result or a ranking of athletic performance.
Two counts of college ties
The NCAA separately reported that 84 NCAA-connected athletes from 51 schools and 27 conferences were on the U.S. roster. That account was published Jan. 26 and offers another measure of the college ties among Team USA athletes.
The two institutional counts are different. The USOPC’s updated summary lists 88 athletes connected to 54 schools and includes NCAA Divisions I, II and III along with collegiate club programs. The NCAA account lists 84 athletes from 51 schools and 27 conferences.
The difference reflects the fact that the two accounts describe their college connections differently. The USOPC database is organized around collegiate experience and includes multiple NCAA divisions and club programs, while the NCAA account identifies NCAA-connected athletes, schools and conferences.
Together, the figures show that athletes with college sports connections appeared across a wide range of institutions and competition levels on the U.S. Olympic team.
Why the figures matter
The updated USOPC information adds a national measure to discussions about the role of college sports in Olympic athlete development. It shows how many U.S. Olympians had a documented connection to collegiate competition and how broadly those connections were distributed among schools and programs.
That information can help policymakers, athletic departments and sports organizations examine the relationship between college athletics and Olympic competition. It is relevant to debates about college-sports funding, access to Olympic sports and the development opportunities available to athletes.
The number of schools represented is also a significant part of the picture. The USOPC identifies 54 schools connected to the 88 athletes, but the figures do not establish that every school provided the same level of financial, recruiting or institutional support.
