VA sets Aug. 22 Indiana EHR launch as online veteran services face temporary limits
The Department of Veterans Affairs is scheduled to launch its Federal Electronic Health Record at Indiana VA facilities on Aug. 22, 2026, while warning veterans about temporary limits on several online services during the transition.
The changes affect how some veterans manage appointments, message care teams and request prescription renewals or refills. The VA’s guidance applies to users nationwide as the department moves through its broader health-information-system transition, but the implementation schedule in the notice is for Indiana facilities.
Online services have different pause and restart dates
Online appointment scheduling at the listed Indiana facilities ended July 22 and is scheduled to resume Oct. 6, 2026. That means veterans who need to arrange care through the online scheduling tool will face a longer interruption than users of some other services.
Online appointment cancellations remain available until midnight Eastern time on Aug. 11. The VA says online cancellation access is scheduled to resume Sept. 1.
Secure messaging and online requests for prescription renewals are scheduled to pause after Aug. 15. Those services are scheduled to resume Aug. 24, two days after the Federal Electronic Health Record launch.
Online prescription-refill requests have a separate deadline. They are scheduled to pause after Aug. 18 and resume Aug. 24.
The different dates mean veterans may not see all affected functions disappear at once. Appointment scheduling has already been suspended under the published timetable, while cancellations, messaging, renewals and refills have their own deadlines and planned return dates.
Facilities included in the Indiana rollout
The rollout includes the Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and Marion VA medical centers, along with multiple clinics in Indiana and Northern Indiana. The guidance identifies those facilities as the sites covered by the Aug. 22 implementation.
The VA says veterans can continue requesting care and prescriptions by contacting their VA health facility during the transition. The guidance also says care teams remain available. The scheduled online-service limits do not establish that in-person care will stop.
Veterans using My HealtheVet on VA.gov or the VA Health and Benefits mobile app should therefore check the applicable deadline for the task they need to complete. A veteran trying to cancel an appointment, send a secure message or request medication may face a different cutoff depending on the service.
What the transition means for veterans
A Federal Electronic Health Record changes the digital system used to manage health information and interact with VA services. For veterans, the immediate practical issue is not a change to a benefit announced in the guidance, but a temporary change in how several routine tasks can be handled online.
Those tasks include scheduling appointments, canceling appointments, communicating securely with care teams and requesting prescription renewals or refills. Veterans who normally rely on online tools may need to contact their facility directly during the affected periods.
The VA’s national guidance was updated in July 2026 and presents the dates as scheduled implementation milestones. It does not establish that the rollout will occur on time or that every facility will experience identical effects. The published schedule specifically addresses the Indiana facilities included in this phase.
Under the current timetable, secure messaging and prescription requests are expected to return Aug. 24. Online appointment cancellations are expected to return Sept. 1, while online appointment scheduling is expected to remain unavailable until Oct. 6. Veterans with immediate care or prescription needs can contact their VA health facility rather than waiting for an online service to return.
