WALK Bridge work will reduce Amtrak and Metro-North weekend service

Weekend rail passengers face another round of reduced Amtrak and Metro-North service as crews continue work on Connecticut’s 130-year-old WALK Bridge in Norwalk.

The next scheduled disruption is September 19-20, followed by additional work weekends on October 10-11 and October 17-18. The first affected weekend was September 12-13. The broader construction work window runs through November 1, 2026, and transportation agencies say the schedule may change.

The September 19-20 weekend is expected to bring the sharpest reductions. Agencies project approximately 55% fewer seats than on a typical Metro-North weekend schedule, with diesel-hauled trains operating through the work zone about every 90 minutes.

What is changing for train passengers

Metro-North will use a reduced-frequency pattern on the New Haven Line, along with a New Haven-Bridgeport shuttle and trains operating between Grand Central Terminal and South Norwalk. Those trains will run express between Grand Central and Stamford, with local service between Stamford and South Norwalk.

The changes do not amount to a full shutdown. Modified trains and shuttles will continue to operate, but passengers traveling east of Stamford should expect fewer departures, fewer seats and possible crowding.

During the September wire-demolition weekends, diesel equipment will operate through the work zone because crews are removing legacy overhead wire infrastructure. The diesel-hauled trains have less capacity than normal electric trains.

Amtrak service between New York and New Haven will be extremely limited during affected weekends. Cancellations or limited ticket availability are possible, so Amtrak passengers should confirm their trains and ticket status before traveling.

Shore Line East riders should also expect altered connections and reduced capacity when transferring to Amtrak or Metro-North. The operator advises passengers to check both the Shore Line East schedule and the connecting carrier’s service plan.

What is not changing

Metro-North local service on the western half of the New Haven Line, between Grand Central and Stamford, is generally not affected by the construction changes. That includes stations in Westchester County and Greenwich, except for a schedule adjustment to one Saturday-only morning train.

That guidance applies to the published weekend plans. Passengers should still check the specific timetable for their trip rather than assume a normal schedule.

Why the bridge work is affecting service

Crews are removing two 234-foot-tall utility towers and overhead wire systems from the movable WALK Bridge. The work requires changes to how trains move through the Norwalk construction zone, particularly during the September weekends devoted to wire demolition.

The October 10-11 and October 17-18 weekends involve high-tower work. Those weekends are expected to reduce seating by approximately 30%, less than the projected September reduction but still enough to create crowding and longer waits on affected routes. Metro-North said special October schedules were expected to be issued in late September.

How to plan for the remaining weekends

Passengers should check MTA service alerts and the TrainTime app immediately before leaving because the construction schedule and operating plans may change. Amtrak riders should verify ticket availability and cancellations directly with Amtrak. Shore Line East passengers making a connection should verify both services.

When practical, riders may have more options by starting a trip at Stamford or South Norwalk, where more frequent trains operate west of the main work zone. Connecticut officials have also pointed passengers to available parking at those stations.

Passengers who must travel east of Stamford should allow extra time and avoid assuming that a normal weekend schedule will be available. The September 19-20 work period is the next scheduled weekend with the most severe service reductions.
