California’s Proposition 40, a proposed one-time wealth tax on billionaires, trailed in unofficial Secretary of State returns Wednesday. The measure had 3,419,197 yes votes, or 44.4%, and 4,277,735 no votes, or 55.6%, with 23,801 of 23,860 precincts partially reporting.
The official voter guide says Proposition 40 would impose a one-time tax equal to 5% of wealth on certain taxpayers with assets above $1 billion, with revenue primarily supporting health care. Vote-by-mail, provisional and other ballots continue to be processed, so the reported lead remains an incomplete count.
