Waymo Launches Autonomous Rides at SFO
Waymo has begun offering fully autonomous rides at San Francisco International Airport (SFO), initially available to a select number of riders. Pickups and drop-offs are currently limited to the SFO Rental Car Center, with plans to expand to additional airport locations in the future. This service marks SFO as the third major U.S. airport to offer commercial robotaxi services.
Debate Over Central Subway Extension Amid Transit Budget Concerns
The discussion about extending San Francisco’s Central Subway has resurfaced as the city’s public transit system faces a $300 million annual deficit. District 3 Supervisor Danny Sauter is advocating for an extension to North Beach and Fisherman’s Wharf, arguing that bold projects could rejuvenate public interest and support for transit funding. However, officials emphasize prioritizing transit efficiency improvements over long-term projects.
Beach Hazards Advisory Issued for Local Coastlines
The National Weather Service has issued a Beach Hazards Statement for San Francisco and Monterey Bay, warning of increased risks of sneaker waves and strong rip currents, with breaking waves of 14 to 19 feet. A Coastal Flood Advisory is also in effect, with up to 1.4 feet of inundation possible in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. Residents and visitors are advised to exercise caution along the coastlines.
