Transit Fixes, Police Pay Deal and Regional Service Changes Lead SF Updates

San Francisco is heading into April with several significant government and infrastructure updates that could shape the city’s budget, transit reliability and public safety spending.

Clipper System Glitches Under Review

Bay Area transit leaders received an update this week on ongoing technical problems tied to the rollout of the upgraded Clipper fare system. The contractor responsible for the payment platform told agency officials it plans to resolve remaining issues by May 30.

The next-generation system, which allows riders to tap credit and debit cards directly, experienced disruptions shortly after launch. Since then, transit agencies including Muni and BART have been monitoring performance closely. Reliable fare collection is critical as agencies work to rebuild ridership and stabilize operating budgets.

Police Union Approves 14% Pay Raise

Members of the San Francisco Police Officers Association voted overwhelmingly to approve a new labor agreement that includes a 14% pay increase.

The deal arrives as the city faces a projected two-year budget deficit of roughly $877 million. City leaders will now have to balance the cost of the contract with other funding priorities, including homelessness services, transit support and public health programs. The agreement is expected to factor heavily into upcoming budget negotiations at City Hall.

Transit and Traffic Advisory for Early April

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency released its weekly transit and traffic advisory covering April 2 through April 8. The update outlines planned street impacts, service adjustments and large events that could affect travel across the city.

Public Works crews are also coordinating infrastructure work in several corridors. Riders are encouraged to check service alerts before traveling, particularly during weekend events and early morning gatherings.

Regional Transit Coordination Expands

Looking beyond city limits, North Bay transit operators announced that coordinated service changes under the Marin-Sonoma Coordinated Transit Service Plan will begin April 12. The effort is designed to improve connections into San Francisco along the Highway 101 corridor.

Regional coordination is increasingly important as downtown recovery efforts continue and more commuters return to in-person work.
