Softball hits the road to open 51st season

Kent State softball launches its 51st varsity season this weekend at the Terrier Invite in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The Golden Flashes are scheduled for five games over three days, starting with a matchup against IU Indy and two contests against host Wofford, plus a Saturday game against Monmouth.

Head coach Jessica O’Donnell brings back a solid core, including last season’s all-conference standouts, alongside a large group of newcomers. The team’s early road stretch will help set the tone before Mid-American Conference play and a May conference tournament in Akron.

Women’s hoops builds momentum with home win

The Kent State women’s basketball team picked up a crucial conference victory at home over Bowling Green on Wednesday night, winning 73–64 at the MAC Center. Junior guard Mya Babbitt led the way with 25 points, while strong rebounding and steady free-throw shooting helped the Flashes control the game late.

The win nudged Kent State back toward the middle of the MAC standings and gave the team confidence heading into today’s MAC–Sun Belt Challenge matchup against Appalachian State. Tipoff is set for early afternoon at the MAC Center, giving fans an easy option for daytime basketball.

Family-friendly and campus events around town

Kent Parks and Recreation is hosting a Kid’s Night Out this evening for children ages 4–11 at the city’s recreation facility on Middlebury Road. The program runs into the evening hours, giving parents a chance for a night off while kids enjoy supervised games and activities.

On campus, students interested in leadership development can spend the day at an immersive Emerging Leader Institute workshop inside the Kent Student Center. The program is geared toward newer student leaders who want structured time to build skills and connect with peers.

Outdoor-minded residents looking beyond the city limits have a countywide option as well, with a frog monitoring volunteer training session scheduled late this morning at a Portage County park facility. The program offers basic instruction for residents who want to help track local amphibian populations when the weather warms up.
