Steelmaker adds planning role at Indiana Harbor

A major steel producer at the Indiana Harbor works is recruiting a full-time manufacturing planning planner in East Chicago. The role focuses on scheduling production, keeping inventory moving on time, and coordinating closely with operations, maintenance, quality, and logistics teams. For residents with industrial or logistics experience, it’s another sign that the harbor’s core employers continue to invest in their local workforce.

North Harbor revitalization work continues

The city’s North Harbor Redevelopment Initiative remains a centerpiece of neighborhood investment. Along Main Street, completed blocks have already seen fresh sidewalks, new trees, and updated street furniture, with more work planned for additional stretches of Main and Broadway. Plans call for new townhomes, retail space, and rehabbed storefronts aimed at bringing foot traffic and small businesses back to long-quiet blocks.

Parks are also part of the push. Designs for Nunez and Callahan parks include modern play equipment, athletic fields, and performance space that can host concerts and community events. A planned park campus would better connect Lincoln Elementary School with the Roberto Clemente Community Center, making it easier for families and students to move safely between the school and after-school programs.

Public safety upgrades are built into the project, with a neighborhood safety and crime prevention program launching first in North Harbor. The city plans to use visible and hidden cameras in parks and other busy areas to deter crime and support quicker responses when incidents occur.

City boards are preparing for a busy February calendar. The Board of Public Works is scheduled to meet on February 12 and February 26 at 4:30 p.m. in the council chambers, handling contracts and approvals tied to city infrastructure and resources. The Plan Commission’s next session is set for February 16 at 4:30 p.m., where members review development proposals and long-range land use plans.

Residents who want to follow legislation and budget debates can also tune in to the Common Council, which meets at 6 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays each month.
