Lexington, NC Daily Brief: Storm Aftermath, Detours and Weekend Events

Lexington is easing into Super Bowl Sunday with a mix of storm cleanup, road work and a surprisingly full calendar of things to do.

Storm aftermath and tricky travel

After a historic winter storm dumped well over a foot of snow across Lexington and much of North Carolina, frigid air has kept neighborhoods icy. A special weather statement issued Friday morning warned that temperatures in the lower 20s would refreeze leftover snowmelt and create patches of black ice, especially on less-traveled streets and bridges.

Drivers heading through town this weekend also face a significant detour. Contractors for the state transportation department are demolishing the northbound U.S. 29/70 bridge, forcing a full closure of West Fifth Avenue and Old U.S. 64 at the bridge from late Friday night through early Monday morning. Ramps to southbound U.S. 29/70 remain open, but officials are urging extra travel time and caution around work crews and detour routes.

Busy weekend around town

Even with the cold, community events are rolling ahead. On Saturday evening, the Great Bowls of Fire Chili Cook-Off and silent auction on Becks Church Road is raising money for local missions supporting the American Children’s Home. (allevents.in)

Earlier in the day, a Galentine’s Party at Providence on Old U.S. Highway 52 offers a lighter option, with beauty sessions, shopping and plenty of time to warm up indoors. Looking ahead: Opera at the Civic Center

Next weekend, Lexington leans into Valentine’s Day with a special performance from Piedmont Opera at the Edward C. Smith Civic Center. The one-night program, presented through the company’s Opera Lite series, promises familiar melodies and lighthearted stories designed to work just as well for date night as for a Galentine’s outing with friends.
