Overnight one-lane restrictions on N.C. 184 near Dobbins Road in Banner Elk were reported to have started Sunday, Oct. 25, 2026, for gas-line replacement, WHKY reported. The North Carolina Department of Transportation announced the schedule Oct. 23, setting nightly lane closures beginning at 6 p.m. and reopening by 6 a.m.
How long could the restriction last? The 6 p.m.-to-6 a.m. schedule spans up to 12 hours each night. NCDOT described a one-lane restriction and advised drivers to plan ahead and allow extra travel time.
The utility contractor was replacing a gas line moved during the culvert project. NCDOT expected the utility work to continue nightly over the following week until finished, but did not give a firm completion date.
That timetable is separate from the culvert forecast. NCDOT said the culvert carries Hanging Rock Creek beneath N.C. 184 and was damaged by Hurricane Helene. Blythe Construction crews expected culvert construction to finish by the end of 2026, a projection that does not set an end date for the gas-line work.
