Santa Ana Daily Local Briefing
City targets rent-setting algorithms
Santa Ana, CA – February 22, 2026 – Santa Ana is moving ahead with a closely watched effort to ban landlords from using rent-setting software to coordinate prices across large apartment complexes. The City Council gave unanimous initial approval to the ordinance at its regular meeting earlier this week.
The proposal would bar property owners and managers from relying on algorithmic tools that pull data from multiple buildings to recommend higher rents, a practice tenant advocates say can artificially inflate prices in a tight housing market. Supporters argue the move is a natural extension of the city’s rent control and tenant protections, and could become a model for other communities watching how corporate landlords use technology.
City staff will now refine the language before the required second reading and final vote. If adopted, the ban would phase in over time and could bring new enforcement rules for large rental operators doing business in Santa Ana.
OC Streetcar prepares for spring launch
Construction on the OC Streetcar is entering its final stretch as officials continue to target a March 2026 opening for the new line linking the Santa Ana Regional Transportation Center to a new transit hub in Garden Grove. The mostly double tracked electric streetcar will run through downtown Santa Ana, including a short loop in the civic and arts core.
Local transportation leaders say the project is designed to make it easier to connect Metrolink riders, bus passengers, and downtown visitors without a car. Testing and safety checks are expected to ramp up in the coming weeks, so residents may see more vehicles on the tracks even before full passenger service begins.
Families get final day for space exhibit
Sunday is the last chance to experience the Solar System Encounter exhibit at Discovery Cube Orange County, just off Main Street in Santa Ana. The immersive, family friendly show uses large scale models and high resolution imagery to walk visitors through the planets, moons, and the latest space science highlights.
The exhibit has been running since January and was scheduled to close at the end of this weekend. It is included with regular museum admission, making it a popular pick for local families looking for an indoor activity during the recent stretch of winter storms.
Weekend events and kid friendly options
Kids and parents also have a few other Santa Ana centered options to round out the weekend. A special electronics recycling promotion at the Santa Ana Zoo offers free same day entry for visitors who bring in eligible old devices, combining a cleanup project at home with an affordable day out.
Downtown, the Artists Village Art Walk continues to draw residents for an evening stroll through galleries, pop up vendors, and live performances. Organizers highlight the event as a low cost way to support local creatives while seeing what is new in the city’s historic core.
