Meadowood-area power vault explosion

Reno fire crews temporarily shut down part of South McCarran Boulevard near Neil Road Saturday evening after an underground electrical vault (power box) exploded near Meadowood Mall.

Officials reported no injuries and said there was no ongoing threat to the public. The blast did, however, trigger a localized outage that left more than 1,000 customers without power at its peak. Traffic was diverted while crews secured the area, and the roadway later reopened as NV Energy began investigating what failed and why.

Sparks councilmember arrested on DUI suspicion

In a separate weekend incident, a Sparks City Council member was arrested early Saturday morning on suspicion of driving under the influence following a crash involving a state vehicle, according to law-enforcement booking information cited in local reporting.

The investigation is being led by the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office. The councilmember has also been suspended from a state job pending an internal review.

Ethics questions land on the planning commission

Local reporting also put a spotlight on how Nevada ethics and disclosure rules apply when two members of a volunteer public body are in a personal relationship.

The bottom line is familiar: relationships are not automatically disqualifying, but commissioners are expected to disclose and step back if a matter could affect private interests or create a conflict under state standards.
