Milwaukee Daily Local Brief: Lead screening clinics, fatal shooting investigation, transit funding
Milwaukee, WI – February 24, 2026 – Lead testing expands in MPS schools, a weekend homicide investigation continues, and new transit funds arrive.
Public health: lead screening inside MPS schools
Milwaukee Public Schools is rolling out more in-school lead screening clinics after landing a federal grant of nearly $400,000. The plan is to bring free testing directly into school buildings, with an emphasis on prevention and early detection following the district’s ongoing lead concerns.
District leaders say the new funding will help expand access for families who might otherwise struggle to schedule testing, and it adds another layer of monitoring as building conditions and remediation work continue across the system.
Public safety: fatal shooting under investigation
Milwaukee police are investigating a deadly shooting that happened just after midnight Saturday near North 22nd Street and West Locust Street. A 63-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, and investigators say they are searching for a known suspect.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact the department or share tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
Getting around: new funding for buses and a community center
Milwaukee County announced it has been awarded $1.25 million in federal funding aimed at transportation and neighborhood infrastructure. County officials say the money will support new bus purchases and upgrades tied to the Kosciuszko Community Center, part of a broader push to improve transit reliability and community spaces.
On the calendar
Residents following street design changes along North Sherman Boulevard can weigh in at a public meeting Tuesday afternoon, where the city is expected to share preferred design concepts for the corridor between West North Avenue and West Capitol Drive.
And at schools this week, MPS is marking Public Schools Week with events and recognition across the district.
