Homelessness response vs. proposed state ‘public camping’ ban
Fort Wayne leaders say they’re reviewing Indiana’s S.B. 285, a statewide ‘public camping’ ban aimed at homelessness, but stress it won’t fix the basic issue of shelter capacity. City officials say local shelters often run at or above capacity, and they’re continuing work on a low-barrier Homeless Services Center designed to expand access to shelter and services year-round.
Fire department consolidation plan heads to more public hearings
Fire chiefs are continuing public hearings on a proposal to unify multiple fire departments outside Fort Wayne city limits into a single system. Supporters say consolidation could help address declining volunteer numbers, improve staffing reliability, and standardize response times across districts. A projected cost discussed publicly has been about 28 cents per $100 of assessed value, with officials noting the final figure depends on certified assessments. A hearing is scheduled today at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum, with another set for March 9.
Road closure after crash on the northwest side
Drivers were asked to avoid part of West Washington Center Road late last week after a crash near West Washington Center and O’Day roads. Authorities reported the road was closed between Stahlhut and O’Day while crews worked the scene and cleared the area.
Weekend note: Indiana Plant Show draws houseplant fans downtown
The first Indiana Plant Show brought vendors and shoppers to the Grand Wayne Convention Center over the weekend, featuring plant sellers from around the country and houseplant-themed booths. Organizers advertised more than 100 tables, with day-of admission and free entry for kids under 16.
