Las Vegas Daily Brief: Double Homicide Probe, Fatal 215 Crash, and Eastside Cannery Implosion Closures

Here is what Las Vegas residents are waking up to on Wednesday: a major police investigation, a deadly freeway crash, and overnight traffic impacts tied to a long-anticipated demolition.

South Las Vegas double homicide under investigation

Police say a woman and a toddler were found shot inside a vehicle near Starr Avenue and Dean Martin Drive on Monday night. Officers were already in the area for a traffic stop when they heard gunfire, then located a nearby vehicle with multiple bullet holes.

Both victims were taken to University Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead. As of the latest update, no suspect had been announced in custody.

Fatal crash on the 215 near Ann Road

Nevada State Police are investigating a deadly early-morning collision on the southbound 215 Beltway at the Ann Road off-ramp. Troopers say the crash involved a passenger sedan and a commercial semi-truck, and the driver of the sedan died at the scene.

Drivers saw lane closures and backups for several hours Wednesday morning before the area reopened later in the morning.

Boulder Highway closure for Eastside Cannery implosion

Heads up if you are traveling late tonight: transportation officials say Boulder Highway will temporarily close between Harmon Avenue and Sun Valley Drive starting Wednesday at 11 p.m., reopening Thursday at 6 a.m. The Eastside Cannery Casino-Hotel demolition is scheduled for about 2 a.m., and it is not set up as a public viewing event.

City seeks proposals for a northwest ice hockey facility

The city is accepting proposals to develop an ice hockey facility on roughly five acres of city-owned land in northwest Las Vegas near the 215 Beltway, with submissions due April 15. If it moves forward, it could add another option for leagues, lessons, and open skate time in a growing part of the valley.

Road safety heads-up

Metro Police plan to join a statewide speed enforcement campaign running March 13–29, with extra patrols aimed at curbing dangerous speeding.
