Moreno Valley Mall Reopens After Fire Safety Shutdown

Moreno Valley, CA – March 7, 2026 – The Moreno Valley Mall has reopened after a two-week fire safety shutdown, with strict new safety deadlines now in place.

Mall Back Open With Conditions

The Moreno Valley Mall has officially reopened following a two-week closure prompted by serious fire safety violations.

City officials ordered the mall to shut down on February 19 after inspectors identified multiple life-safety concerns, including problems with fire doors, sprinkler systems, emergency lighting and backup generators. The closure affected dozens of small businesses and employees across the indoor shopping center.

What Changed

According to city leaders, the mall’s ownership addressed enough of the violations to allow tenants to reopen this week. Fire officials worked daily with contractors and mall representatives to verify progress and conduct inspections.

To resume operations, management agreed to specific conditions. These include maintaining fire watch personnel in certain areas and completing permanent repairs to critical systems within set deadlines.

Deadlines Ahead

The reopening comes with strict timelines. Fire-rated doors must be brought into full compliance by March 31. Emergency generators must also be restored, repaired or replaced within 90 days. If those requirements are not met, city officials have warned the mall could face another immediate shutdown.

Mayor Ulises Cabrera said the reopening brings relief to workers and small businesses that depend on the mall. During the closure, some anchor stores with separate safety systems remained open, but much of the main complex was inaccessible to shoppers.

Community Impact

The Moreno Valley Mall has served as a regional retail hub since the early 1990s. The temporary shutdown raised broader concerns about aging infrastructure and safety compliance at large commercial properties.

For now, shoppers can return, but city officials say oversight will continue as long-term repairs move forward.
