Suspicious Device Cleared Near Gracie Mansion; 3-K Expansion and Warm Weather Make Headlines
New York, NY – March 11, 2026 – Police cleared a device near Gracie Mansion, City Hall announced 3-K expansion plans, and springlike heat swept the city.
It has been a busy stretch across the five boroughs, with public safety, schools and even the weather grabbing attention.
Device Investigation Near Gracie Mansion
Police temporarily shut down parts of Carl Schurz Park on the Upper East Side Tuesday after a suspicious device was discovered near Gracie Mansion. The NYPD later determined the device was non-threatening and reopened the area.
The incident came just days after federal prosecutors charged two men with terrorism in connection to alleged homemade explosives thrown during a protest outside the mayor’s residence. Neither device detonated and no injuries were reported, but the cases have heightened security concerns around the property.
City Expands 3-K Seats
At City Hall, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the city will add more than 1,000 new 3-K seats this fall. The expansion targets dozens of ZIP codes where demand has outpaced availability, with new seats spread across all five boroughs.
Officials say the goal is to ease waitlists and improve early childhood access in neighborhoods that have struggled to secure placements.
14th Street Redesign Moves Forward
The city is also kicking off the public planning process for a redesign of Manhattan’s 14th Street corridor. Transportation officials say upgrades to the existing busway could further improve travel times and build on gains seen since the busway launched in 2019.
A public meeting later this month will mark the first step in gathering community input.
Springlike Heat Sweeps In
Meanwhile, New Yorkers got a taste of early summer. Temperatures climbed into the upper 70s and near 80 degrees in parts of the city on Tuesday, far above typical early March averages. Forecasters say milder air will linger before a more seasonal cooldown.
