New York Fuel Prices Split: Gas Rises to $4.23 as Diesel Slips to $5.86

New York fuel prices moved in opposite directions in the latest AAA check. The statewide average for regular gasoline rose 1.1 cents to $4.230 per gallon on July 31, while the diesel average fell 1.7 cents to $5.861.

Regular gas rises slightly but remains below last week

AAA’s regular-gas average increased from $4.219 on July 30 to $4.230 on July 31. That is a modest one-day increase, but the latest average is 0.9 cents below the $4.239 reading from a week earlier.

The longer comparisons are higher. Regular gasoline is up 20.4 cents from the month-ago average of $4.026 and up $1.041 from the year-ago average of $3.189.

For New York City specifically, the U.S. Energy Information Administration lists regular gasoline at $4.114 per gallon for the week of July 27. The figure was released July 28 and is a weekly city-specific measure, not a same-day July 31 station average.

Diesel falls for one day, but remains elevated

Diesel declined from $5.878 on July 30 to $5.861 on July 31 in AAA’s New York statewide data. The one-day decrease may provide limited relief for drivers and businesses that rely on diesel equipment, but it does not reverse the broader increases.

AAA shows diesel up 5.3 cents from a week earlier, up 25.2 cents from a month earlier and up $1.708 from a year earlier. Diesel is therefore easing on the latest check while remaining more expensive across each longer comparison window.

Commuters and households buying regular gasoline may see little change from one day to the next, but the year-over-year increase remains large enough to affect weekly transportation budgets. Comparing nearby stations can matter because statewide and regional averages do not reflect prices at every neighborhood pump or borough location.
