New York Metro Gas and Diesel Prices Diverge Slightly, Both Remain Well Above Last Year

Regular gasoline eased slightly in the New York metropolitan area on Wednesday, July 29, while diesel moved higher. AAA reported a metro average of $4.236 per gallon for regular gas, down 0.5 cents from Tuesday, and $5.864 for diesel, up 0.4 cents.

These are New York metro averages, not separately verified New York City-only prices. Drivers may see meaningful differences between neighborhoods, boroughs, stations, and payment methods.

Gas is down for the day but up across every longer comparison

AAA’s New York metro regular-gas average was 4.5 cents higher than a week earlier, 21.2 cents higher than a month earlier, and $1.056 higher than a year earlier.

At Wednesday’s metro average, a 15-gallon fill-up would cost about $63.54 before station-specific discounts or price differences. The small daily decline does not change the larger comparison: regular gas remains considerably more expensive than it was during each of those earlier periods.

Diesel moved higher and remains much more expensive than last year

Diesel moved in the opposite direction. The $5.864 average was 0.4 cents above Tuesday’s figure, 9.1 cents above last week’s, 25.6 cents above last month’s, and $1.716 above the year-ago average.

A 20-gallon diesel fill-up at the metro average would cost about $117.28. That makes the price movement especially important for delivery operators, contractors, service fleets, and other businesses whose vehicles travel many miles or use large tanks.

Why government figures do not match AAA exactly

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported a New York weekly regular-gas average of $4.138 for the week of July 27. That is not a same-day replacement for AAA’s $4.236 metro average. EIA publishes a weekly series, while AAA reports daily metro data using different collection methods and geographic definitions.

NYSERDA‘s latest diesel observation was $5.370 per gallon on July 20 for a broader New York surrogate region covering New York, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and the District of Columbia. That figure provides regional context, but it is not a New York City price or a same-day comparison with AAA’s July 29 metro average.

What New York drivers and businesses can watch

Commuters should compare stations before filling up because a metro average does not represent every pump. Households that rely on regular driving may need to plan for larger weekly fuel budgets while prices remain well above last year’s levels.

For delivery companies, contractors, restaurants, service businesses, and other operators, diesel’s larger year-over-year increase can add pressure to trip planning, operating costs, and customer pricing. Those are practical effects to watch, not documented changes announced by any one business.
