National Guard Brigade Launches as Arts Festival Dates and CAA Tournament Kick Off
New Security Brigade Activated
A newly formed 260th Special Purpose Brigade is now active at the D.C. Armory, marking a significant shift in how the nation’s capital coordinates security and emergency response. The unit, part of the District of Columbia Army National Guard, was activated March 7 and is designed to serve as a command hub for military and civil support operations in Washington.
According to officials, the brigade will focus on rapid coordination during major events or potential threats, working alongside federal and local partners. Its launch follows recent federal actions reshaping public safety oversight in the District.
Art All Night 2026 Dates Set
Mayor Muriel Bowser this week announced that Art All Night 2026 will take place September 11 and 12. The annual, citywide arts celebration spans all eight wards and features free performances, pop-up exhibits, and late-night programming that spotlights local artists and small businesses.
Now in its 15th year, the festival has become a fall tradition, drawing thousands of residents into neighborhood corridors for music, visual art, and community gatherings. Organizers say more details on participating venues and performers will be released in the coming months.
CAA Women’s Tournament Underway
College basketball fans are also turning their attention to CareFirst Arena, where the 2026 CAA women’s basketball tournament tipped off March 11. The competition runs through March 15 and brings teams and supporters from across the conference into Southeast Washington.
The tournament is expected to boost foot traffic for nearby restaurants and businesses while giving local fans a chance to see postseason play close to home.
